Measuring Lotus Traveler traffic consumption on Nokia E65

Category Lotus Traveler
The last couple of weeks I have done a small study. I wanted to know how much data my Lotus Traveler client was transferring. I am on a data plan where I pay per megabyte, so the number of course is of interest to me and the people who pay my phone bill.

My average transfer is just short of 300 Kbytes every 24 hours. This is the average measured over a period of two complete weeks. So I wille end up in transferring about 9 Megabytes every month.

I use Traveler for:

Email synchronisation
Just the inbox, no other folders. I work in a way where my inbox is supposed to be empty. I move emails out of the Inbox when they have been handled in some fashion. I am following the GTD practice, using the eProductivity email template.
I receive about 30 emails every day.
I send about one email from the actual device per day. I send lots more from my Notes client of course, but they do not sync.

Settings:
Folders = None subscribed
Remove mail after = 5 days
Importance = All messages

Calendar synchronisation
Settings:
Show past events = 1 month.
Show upcoming events = 6 months
Show Tasks = Show incomplete only

Other applications (contacts)
Just the contacts. I have about 100 of those.

Here is how I did the measuring. Not very scientific or fancy at all.
On my Nokia E65 I did like this:

Menu button->Log->Left->Packet data
Here You can see the data transferred inbound and outbound since the last reset of the counters.

To reset the counter:
Options->Clear counters
You will probably need a "Lock code" now that probably is not the same as when you turn on the device..... I found out that the default value for this code is "12345".
Now the counter is reset. Return in a week and have a look at the counter, divide by seven and you have an approximate daily useage.
Oh yes.... This method will measure all data traffic of course. So if you do web surfing or have other bits of software that will transfer data, the data useage of those will be included in the numbers.

When I wanted to reset my counter, it complained that it could not reset when there was an active Data Packet connection. I fiexed that by opening tge Lotus Traveler settings and then turning off automatic synchronisation, then resetting the counter and then turning on the Traveler synchronisation again.

Lotus Traveler AutoSync on Nokia E65 fixed by Lotus

Category Lotus Traveler
On the 25th of february Lotus released a fix for Lotus Traveler that contains address a number of issues.
The one I was interested in was that the Traveler client for Nokia (Symbian OS) devices stopped synchronizing every 3-6 hours on my Nokia E65: Lotus Traveler - still not stable Auto sync on Nokia E65.
I applied the fix to my Traveler server and I installed the new client. And it works. I have had the client running continuously for almost a week now, and it has never stopped synchronizing.
If you need to get hold of the fix, then access www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/ and then go like this: Lotus --> Lotus Notes Traveler --> 8.5.0.1 And the rest is self explanatory.
This fix pack actually contains a number of fixes, so do not let the description scare you away. There is a good readme-file inside the package.

Lotus Traveler Auto Sync problem on Nokia E65 - Fix is on the way

Category Lotus Traveler
I have recently blogged a couple of times about my issues with the Automatic Synchronization feature of the Lotus Traveler client on my Nokia E65 Symbian phone. Link: Lotus Traveler - still not stable Auto sync on Nokia E65
Most of the time the client works just fine. But every 4-6 hours the synchronisation stops. The client has a status page that tells me that the "Device is currently up to date" which it is not.
I wrote about my problem on the Notes/Domino 8.5 forum on notes.net, and this led to an engineer at Lotus getting in contact with me. I have supplied him with log files from my device, and he has just told me that a fix for my problem will probably be released within a couple of weeks. Great!

Lotus Traveler client - Lotus is in contact with me on my Auto sync problem

Category Lotus Traveler
I wrote a post on the Notes.net Notes/Domino 8.5 forum last week (Traveler auto sync works and then stops working). And someone in Lotus responded there.
He asked me to create a Support Incident. But unfortunately I can't do that as I am a Business Partner, not a Lotus customer. So I suggested that he should write me an email.
And what happens - he sent me an email asking me for log files. I have just sent him a fresh package generated off my Nokia E65. I sure hope they can fix it.
One of my colleagues suggest that it could have something to do with the firmware on my Phone. Mine is called "3.0633.69.00 06-02-08 RM-208 Nokia E65", while his - also an E65 - starts with a 4, not a 3. I have asked my Nokia PC suite to look for a newer firmware but it tells me that I have the newest one available. My guess is that the hardware in my phone is older even if it is still an E65.

Lotus Traveler - still not stable Auto sync on Nokia E65

Category Lotus Traveler
I have now had about a couple of weeks of experience with Lotus Traveler 8.5 running off my Nokia E65.
The server part of it is just fine.
It's extremely easy to install on top of an existing Windows-based Domino 8.5 server. Basically just pressing next, next, next. If the Domino server was configured for Single Signon, that's it. Traveler is running.
Configuration of Traveler is done on the Domino Server Document. But there is no need to do any configuration from the start.

Then there is the client side of it. The reason why I wanted to install a Traveler server was that with version 8.5 there was a client for my Nokia phone.
Installation again is very simple. Pointing the phone's browser at the Traveler server, clicking the link and agreeing to install.
When the client has been installed, You need to configure it with a password and username (the Domino Directory HTTP username and password), traveler server's hostname and what connection  to use (WiFi for instance).
You also need to select what you want to sync:
  • Mail
  • Calendar/ToDo
  • Contacts
  • Notes

The Notes sync option seems rather amputated, only supporting sync from Domino to the device, not the other way.

The sync'ing works just great. It's very fast. I'd say that about half of my inbound emails are announced on the device before my Notes client makes the You've got mail sound.
I like two features the best:
Calendar sync. Being absolutely sure that Notes- and and Device calendars are up to date is great.
Contact sync. Same thing as with the calendar. I also prefer working with contact data on the Notes client.

Email sync is nice, but I work most of the day with the Notes client open, so the email on the phone really doesn't help me much.
Except of course when I am away from the Notes client.
The  value of sync'ing the different data types really depends on what your work situation requires.

There is just one issue with the Traveler client. It stops sync'ing. It syncs just fine between four and six hours. Then it stops.
I have found that I can make it start sync'ing again by turning Auto Sync off and the on again. But that of course is not a permanent solution.

And then the Traveler client never tells me that it has stopped synchronizing.
If I open up the Traveler Client it has a status text display that will say
Connected to server.
Device is currently up-to-date.

Which is not true all of the time. Because that's also what it says when it has stopped sync'ing.
Then when I select Options->Auto sync-Off
The message wil change to something like this:
Not connected to server.
Device is up-to-date as of today at 12:17.

And that time might be hours ago.
Selecting Options->Auto sync-On
Will then activate the automatic synchronisation for another six hours or therabouts.

There is a place where you can see if everything is all right. That is by opening up a browser to the Traveler servlet. http://the.travelerserver.com/servlet/traveler. This requires a login.
Here is an example:
A picture named M2
This sample tells me that something is not OK. "Waiting For Message From Device..."  means that the Device has not been checking in with the Traveler server.
And the last bit also shows that there is data on the server waiting to sync to the device: "mail:add" means there is email waiting to sync.

I have found this servlet to be my best source of status information on my automatic synchronisation.
