Android synci'ing PIM with Lotus Traveler: TouchDown

Category Android
I need a phone that can run apps.
Until today I thought that what i needed was an iPhone.
Now I will consider an Android-based device instead.
And what made me change my mind?

It looks like I will be able to have Lotus Traveler-based synchronisation between an Android device and my Domino email.

I stumubled upon Jake Howlett having created his own app on his HTC Hero (which runs Android as its OS): My Hero To The Rescue. And that is a great thing about Android - it looks a lot more open to me. I would be able to create my own Java Apps.
I had a look at how to create my own apps for the iPhone. It looks like I would need C programming skills. Forget it.

I also need an app for Geocaching. There are apps for both the iPhone and Android. A quick Google-based research shows this: GeoBeagle – Geocaching Android Style.

But I am addicted to the Lotus Traveler synchronisation. I have it on my Nokia E65 (running the Symbian OS), and it just works. No glitches.
well, Android is not on the list of currently supported device OSes for Lotus Traveler, and that is the reason I haven't really looked very much into what the Andoid has on offer. I did some more research, and look what I found:

A product called TouchDown from a company called Nitrodesk. List price is currently USD 9.99. And the feature-list is long.
And in a pdf brochure for TouchDown I found mention of Lotus Traveler 8.5.1:
Supports multiple servers
  • Exchange 2003/2007/2010
  • Kerio
  • Zimbra
  • Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.1 (Beta)
It's beta, yes. But it is certainly interesting.

Gravatar Image2 - It works!!!

Gravatar Image3 - @2 hey Jeovani!
Please let me have more information on what works. Mail/Calenda/ToDo - does all of it sync and both ways?
And also about the app. I can see that it has its own UI. Is it OK to work with?

Gravatar Image4 - I have installed Lotus Traveler 8.5.1
I have an HTC TYTN II with android on it.. (tks to xda developers)
and I try Touchdown after read your post
I configured the software and It ran flawless, bring my email, contacts, calendar, tasks. It doesn't show my contacts directly on the phone (I don't know why...)

I don't use Android every time so I went back to windows mobile on my Tytn.

Gravatar Image5 - I am not able to connect my HTC Hero to Lotus Traveler using TocuDown ver 5.0.0002
I do not know what I am missing, but unable to authenticate. Can any of you provide a step by step setup - I have reviewed TouchDown "tdstartup" - but I must do something wrong.....

An authentication problem to me sounds like you need to look at something outside of the TouchDown software.
Are you able to log on to the traveler Domino server using a browser?
Do you have national letters as part of either your login name or password?

The traveler server has a diagnostics page. Something along this kind of URL: { Link }
Can you log on to that page using a browser. Using of course the same username and password that you are trying to use in TouchDown?

When I log on to that page I see information like this:

User Status (Jens Bruntt/Dev/Convergens)
Lotus Notes Traveler server is available.
TouchDown(MSRPC): Online and no pending changes to synchronize.

Gravatar Image7 - Using a browser or browsing with the HTC I can reach the server { Link }

But you got a point loggin on to the servers diagnostics from a browser. I can not succeed!

So I will look ino the authentication - thank you so far (vey much), I will keep you updated.
